A challenge for SA political parties

Msindisi Dube from Krugersdorp writes:

I have no doubt that SA’s democracy is well and vibrant, and I am sure thousands of people share my sentiments.

With regard to our recent elections, it was inspiring to see how everyone wanted this country to work again.

We might not all be politically frenzied, but it matters who we choose to govern us. Having said that, I am astonished by the number of eligible voters who don’t bother to register.

According to known sources, we have close to 10 million people who have no interest in voting. Yes, international standards rate 60 per cent of registered voters who turn up as good, but the number of unregistered voters is worrisome.

With that said, I think we’ll have a country not governed by majority party rule but by the majority of those who voted. I am challenging political parties to go all out to teach the millions about the importance of voting and strengthening democracy in SA, rather than only being visible when it’s campaigning time.
