Why men abuse women

Thabile Mange from Krugersdorp writes:

This September my third book titled Why men abuse women will be published by means of self-publishing.

This is an emotive subject but we should not shy away from discussing it openly. As a social activist, I’m concerned about the high rate of female abuse in SA. It is out of control, and causing a lot of damage to the fairer sex.

Many women have lost their precious lives because of abuse. The name of the late Karabo Mokoena comes to mind. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Some females are emotionally unstable and physically challenged because of this evil. In simple terms, the quality of their lives has been compromised as a result.

Since I have publicly announced that I’m writing a book about female abuse, I have had many women (of all races) revealing to me that they are living in abusive relationships. I was shocked to learn that the men of the cloth are the worst perpetrators of this scourge. Some I know personally and respect, but that has since changed.

One victim had to resign from her job and leave the country, running away from her abusive husband, who used to follow her to work and hit her there. Last time, he beat her to a pulp and dropped her off at the hospital. He didn’t visit her even once in hospital. How cruel!

The husband doesn’t know where his wife is and doesn’t give a damn. When people ask about her, he lies and says she’s working in another province. She only returned to the country three months ago. She has a job and is rebuilding her life slowly. But she is still emotionally scarred and plans to divorce her husband soon.

The book is written in simple and plain language. Topics covered are patriarchy, why women stay in abusive relationships, contributory factors, lack of support for abused women, stories of abused females and femicide, among others. The last chapter attempts to find out if there is a solution to this scourge.

Many books have been written on the subject of female abuse. Why men abuse women adds to the existing literature. The more the merrier. I hope and trust that it will help to change the attitude of men towards women.
