Eskom and Mogale – its simple money management 101

Gerd Diederichs from Krugersdorp writes:

In your article it says that an approximate R60–R80 million consumption will bring the Eskom bill back up …

Sure. But I would have assumed that Mogale City Local Municipality is receiving that much money from the consumers as they pay their municipal bills. So there should not necessarily be a shortfall. As we have to pay our current bills on time, surely so must the municipality.

When we learn about managing our money, one of the things we learn is that as you catch up with old debt you can’t afford to neglect the new debt. Okay, then they teach us about credit cards and undo all the positive learning. But still, successful money management principles tell you that you don’t accrue debt on the card – there are much cheaper ways to borrow money.

And surely, seeing that it is so difficult for Eskom to generate enough electricity*, we wouldn’t want to give them an excuse for not selling us what they already have …

*How do we rate an electricity supplier that tells us in all seriousness that the reason they couldn’t supply any from this one particular plant is that they couldn’t get the (wet) coal to the furnaces because there was – get this – no electricity to run the conveyor belts? If SA Breweries were run this way we’d be a nation of involuntary teetotallers.

I hope someone at the municipal office reads this. If they want, I can come in and teach them a bit more about this …
