Once bitten, twice shy gives time to heal

"The worst thing to do is never trust again. Living the rest of your life without hoping or dreaming. Looking at each and every person with distrust."

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

We all, without exception, experience disappointments. People disappoint us, life disappoints us and yes, often we disappoint ourselves.

There is no area in life where this is more true than in marriage. People get married with wonderful, often unrealistic expectations. A year or more later, disappointment leads to divorce. I would have thought, “once bitten, twice shy”. I would think that once you have felt the pain of rejection, betrayal or abuse, that you would be very careful. Weeks later there is someone new, and often the cycle is repeated.

The worst thing to do is never trust again. Living the rest of your life without hoping or dreaming. Looking at each and every person with distrust.

Like most, I have also experienced pain. As a Pastor, it is a regular battle. But I know at least a few anchors in my life. My wife, my family, and a few close friends provide me with a platform to rebuild my life, time and again.

Then the book that has become the cornerstone of my life gives me hope. “Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding.”

Disappointment is part of life. “Once bitten, twice shy” just gives me a chance to heal before I move on with life.

Living in the past kills the future.
