People want answers

Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

By far the most difficult part of my occupation as a pastor is facing honest, sincere, desperate questions – questions about life and death, heaven and hell, or suffering of children.

People turn to the pastor or dominee for answers. It is so easy to give answers that comfort but make no sense, using religion to give hope that is not hope at all.

Why do good people suffer? Where do people who commit suicide spend eternity? Will people from other religions go to heaven?

Allow me to give you a bit of inside information that you may not like. These questions are simple to answer. All you need is an opinion based on other people’s ideas and link it to a verse in the Bible. Often that verse is out of context.

Your doctor cannot say, “I don’t know”. Your accountant cannot say, “I don’t know”.

Most of us don’t know how the internal combustion engine in our cars work. Fuel, spark and moving pistons are not part of intellectual power that helps us to drive. No, it is a key, it is foot on the pedal. My faith is not built on answers but common sense. There is no other logical explanation for creation. Then there is trust. People call it faith. Deep in my heart I know there is a God. I trust him with all of our questions.

PS: If someone has all the answers, they are probably lying to us.
