Forgive and forget

You are not perfect, you will make mistakes. Accept it. But don’t stop trying to be better.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Easier said than done. To forgive is not an option.

We all know people that for years could not forgive. They are often bitter and twisted in their unforgiveness. It is a biblical principle to forgive.

But is it even possible to forget? An emotion and an experience combine to create a chemistry in you that cannot by choice be deleted. Yes, I can forget where I put my keys and it is possible to forget an appointment.

But is it impossible to forget certain things? The miracle of God is that you can forgive without forgetting.

Forgiveness is a choice. You and I can forgive anyone of almost anything. It is a choice only you can make.

But to forget is not biblical. The Bible never says “forget”, in fact it often says “forget not”. In my life I accept God’s forgiveness, I appreciate people’s forgiveness. But to be honest, most of us struggle to forgive ourselves. Some people unfortunately forget all the good they have done and they never forget their own failings.

You are not perfect, you will make mistakes. Accept it. But don’t stop trying to be better. In the field of forgetting God is so different from all of us. The Bible says God chooses not to remember our sin. Forgetting is a godly characteristic we cannot fully understand or appreciate. Remember forgiving is a choice, forgetting is a God thing.
