Just ‘be’ you

Be kind, be sincere, be stable, be available, be real. Just be the you God created you to be.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

If you asked me why I chose to be a pastor, the answer would be simple. I really wanted to make the world a better place. I wanted to help people.

That would involve lots of advice. Honestly, much of that advice, although sincere, was short on experience. How would I advise people on issues I had never experienced? Yes, and I would spend my life trying to fix things and people.

This all led to lots of frustration, disappointment and confusion.

Recently, as I looked back over my life, I came to an interesting conclusion. The key to changing the world relies less on doing and more on just ‘be’-ing.

All my sermons, all my articles in the News (38 years), all my advice and effort have not achieved what I set out to do. You and I cannot change the world, but we can help change someone’s world. Not so much by what we say or do, but just by ‘be’-ing.

Be kind, be sincere, be stable, be available, be real. Just be the you God created you to be.

It will affect the worlds of the people in your family, friends, work colleagues and even total strangers.

Yes, it is important to speak and to do, but your power to change the world is entrenched in who you are. God created you special. It is not what you do as much as who you are. Just ‘be’ you.
