Light a candle

If you are in a dark place in yourself, stop, light a candle and say a prayer.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Spoilt by the flick of a switch that floods a room with light, we often forget the simple beauty of a candle.

A single candle can light, not only a room, but a soul. In our home candles are appreciated for their pure magic. Candles have even been given the status of being “romantic”.

As darkness conjures up fear, so light brings hope. If you are in a dark place today, if you feel scared, why not light a candle. Watch the little flame flicker. Take a deep breath, be silent in your storm and appreciate something that is priceless, a moment of pure joy.

During a recent power outage, we lit all the candles in our home. Hanging on the walls and standing on the tables these little candles created an atmosphere that words cannot describe. We quickly took a few photos to capture the moment. Not expensive, yet a candle can add value to almost any occasion.

A candlelit dinner. Coffee around a few candles. Family and friends looking at each other watching the candle’s flame in each other’s eyes is a memory.

In many churches, candles are lit to bring our attention to him who is the light of the world. If you are in a dark place in yourself, stop, light a candle and say a prayer.
