Is the rat race worth it?

The key to happiness is not having everything you want, but rather to have everything you need.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

When you chose to read this article, you took a 90 second break from your own personal ‘rat race’. According to a dictionary, a rat race is “a way of life where people are caught up in a fiercely competitive struggle for wealth and power”.

Some people think that a rat race issue is a modern illness, a 21st century challenge. But the truth is that throughout history people have fallen into the trap of chasing wealth and power.

We envy people who have everything – car, cash and clothes. We then embark on a journey to get it all. But the key to happiness is not having everything you want, but rather to have everything you need.

A Porche may cost only R1 000 000, but to buy it you have to know the hours spent to get it. Hours taken away from family, friends and faith.

The Bible is an old book. Some of it was written thousands of years ago. Reading it, we become aware that although things change, everything stays the same. To avoid the rat race, don’t desire more, only learn to be content with what you have.

Hebrews 13:5, “But godliness with contentment is great gain”.
