Gold medal hopefuls toughening up for Dusi
Conrad Durand teamed up with fellow golf buddy, Gregg McWilliams to test their partnership for the upcoming Dusi event.
With the Dusi Canoe Marathon scheduled for mid February, Krugersdorp canoeists are training hard to reach their best potential before end January.
The Eurosteel Rumble, a two-day race of some 36 and 24km per day that took place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January not only provided excellent prize money and sponsorships attracting top potential winning paddlers from Gauteng, but also provided superb toughening conditions for their Dusi training.
From Krugersdorp, Iron Man athlete and Comrades runner Conrad Durand teamed up with fellow golf buddy, Gregg McWilliams to test their partnership for the upcoming Dusi event.
The pair finished respectfully in 29th position, clinching the third place podium position in the Sub-Veteran age category, having finished in six hours and 37 minutes over the two days.
The weekend saw blistering hot weather in the northern Gauteng region where paddlers converged on the Jukskei River to paddle from the Heron Bridge School towards Hartebeespoort Dam, with very low water levels and tough steep running sections where canoeists had to carry their boats, preparing for the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.
The race covered 60km – half the distance needed to cover for the three-day Dusi event.
