Soccer and netball games to inspire community

The Oupa Malefo Games dare you to brave the cold and have some sporting fun with your family.

A netball and soccer fun day is on its way and local resident Malefo Monnanyana wants everyone to take part.

Malefo, who is 30 years old, grew up in Kagiso, and has always had an interest in sport. He played soccer, cricket and did athletics when he was younger, so it is no wonder he is hosting a sports fun day on the West Rand.

“These games will benefit children from the age of six, all the way through high school, although programmes for adults will also be available. Through this initiative we are hoping to bring the community together, engage the youth and young adults to participate in sports and grow healthy bodies and minds,” he told the News.

He said that anyone from the West Rand can participate, regardless of their level of experience.

Although these games are an informal and fun way to introduce various sports to the community and encourage them to participate, Malefo has plans to make this a much bigger event.

“My partners – Oupa Makamole and Semakaleng Monnyana – and I have dreams of creating a sports programme for the youth of the West Rand. We want to increase participation in sports and encourage a healthy lifestyle,” he told the News.

Planning an event of this magnitude has not gone without its challenges. Although they are almost done, they are in need of soccer and netball bibs and bottled water for the participants.

Oupa is confident that the games will be a success, “There will be incentives for taking part and for the winning teams. We are also going to have music, jumping castles for the little ones, and a medical booth for health check-ups on the day,” he said.

So, whether you’re doing it for fun, to entertain your little ones in a sporting environment, or wanting to get a free health check-up, the Oupa Malefo Games promise to have everything you need on the day.

The event takes place on Saturday, 16 July at the Kagiso Extension 13 sports complex.
