A triangle of brothers

"The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know."

A triangle has been proven to be the strongest geometrical shape, but a triangle of brothers is even stronger.

Louw, Gerhard and Dewald Schultz have proven this theory over and over again as their bond and love for judo keeps them united, standing and sane.

It all started with Louw, the oldest of the three, who developed a passion for judo after going to a class with his friends.

For years he has loved judo and has even won a few medals.

“Through all the years, judo has been there for me in ways I cannot convey in words. You learn how to cope with pain, you learn how to concentrate for long periods of time, and it’s that concentration that leads you to forget everything around you,” said Louw.

He has since become a Sensei and a judo instructor.

Gerhard, the middle brother, started judo just because his brother did it, and at first he was afraid of falling behind. But, he was able to learn so quickly that he soon matched his older brother’s strength and technique. He learns much faster than the average person, and because he often competed against Louw, he learnt extra quickly, and now he is often stronger than his opponents. He’s a draftsman by trade, and a bit of an introvert – so his sport and his career are the two opposite ends of the spectrum.

His versatility also developed as he had to compete against his stronger, older brother and his younger, lighter brother.

“The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know,” said Gerhard.

Although the older brothers are good examples for their younger brother, they both agree that Dewald is the one that motivates their ‘team’ the most.

“Even though he’s the youngest, we look up to him more than we look up to anyone else. He has this passion and undying dedication for whatever he does. He runs behind you and pushes you when you are tired during a 5km jog,” said Gerhard. He has accomplished so much in judo as well.

It’s not just their physical strength that makes them strong, but also their brotherly bond that makes them a force to be reckoned with. They are very close, they motivate each other every step of the way, and they are involved in each others lives. And their bond is glued together by the discipline, universality and dedication required by judo.
