Karatekas conquer their competitors

Sensei Gi-Gi Albarran is especially proud of four of these participants since it was their first karate competition.

The Krugersdorp Goju Ryu Karate Academy is proud to announce that five of its karatekas performed exceptionally well during their most recent Goju Ryu Karate Competition.

This competition, which was held at Kenton Primary School in Alberton, saw seven karatekas from the Academy give their all in two divisions, namely kata and kumite.

Sensei Gi-Gi Albarran is especially proud of four of these participants since it was their first karate competition.

This is what the five karatekas achieved:

• Duray Hyman – gold in both kata and kumite
• Nathan van den Berg – silver in kumite
• Sylvano Hyman – silver in kumite
• Draiven White – silver in both kata and kumite
• Ryan Koertzen – gold in kumite and silver in kata

“A competition is much more than just winning medals. It takes tremendous courage to get into a ring and fight an opponent you know nothing about. All of my students that participated showed this tremendous courage, especially the first-timers who are now, more than ever, determined to do so again,” Gi-Gi said.

“Karate gave all of my students something to look forward to. It boosted their self-worth and their knowledge that they are not victims but can stand up for themselves. I teach people that there is no such thing as ‘I can’t’.”

She added that they have managed to exceed all of her expectations and that they are now looking forward to the SA Goju Ryu Karate Championships that will take place in June.
