Daring motocross action in the dirt

An awesome day of racing for all motocross lovers

Dirt Bronco hosted the third round of the Inland Motocross series on Sunday, 15 April, and boy – was it a good one!

As soon as the sun rose, motocross riders lined up in front of the registration point. There were so many riders it took longer for all of them to register than expected.

The 50cc class had 34 entrants, the 65cc class had 29 riders and there was a total of 167 entrants – a record for the series.

Eddie Wantenaar, owner of the track, said that the number of entries shows that the sport is growing. “Another positive sign is the number of girls and women who are entering our race events. This is what the series was designed to do – attract novice riders and cost-effectively introduce them to the thrill of racing,” said Eddie.

Competitors and organisers of the race were worried about the weather because it looked like it was going to rain, but it held out quite nicely and the riders were able to enjoy sunshine later in the day.

Tyrel Smith, a 50 cc rider had an awesome day on the track.

“What an awesome series,” he said. “It was my last official race as a 5-year-old and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I managed a 10th overall for the day after four crashes in Heat 1 and two in Heat 2.

Now I’m going to celebrate my birthday and work on getting onto that podium.

KD Smith, one of the other riders, also said it was an awesome day of racing. “After two weeks of being sick and in and out of hospital and only getting cleared to race on Friday, 13 April,” said KD, “I’m not too happy with my placement of 15th overall, but nonetheless I had a great time racing with my MX friends.

Justin Boniface, of the Beta Motor South Africa team was racing his Beta 300 RR and mixing it up with the MX Support class. Justin’s Beta absolutely charged through the field in both heats among the 30-odd riders.

The series is hosted in collaboration with two other tracks – Smoking Pistons in the South and ERORA in the East.
