Local paddlers train for the big one – the Dusi

Kobus is a novice first-year river paddler and Craig has a number of years' paddling experience.

Paddlers in Gauteng are getting organised and fit for the serious part of the canoeing race year.

The season, which begins in April, covers winter training but with the warmer Spring weather, the paddlers are taking their fitness more seriously as they prepare for the upcoming A Grade Fish River race in October.

This is leading up to the Dusi and paddlers are taking on 20km races, building up to 80km, until the 120km endurance event in February.

The Watuni Club based in Vanderbijlpark, organised a 20km race from Henley on Klip to Meyerton on 18 August, where Kobus Ellis from Krugersdorp partnered with Craig Smith to finish the race in a good time of one hour 49 minutes. Kobus is a novice first-year river paddler and Craig has a number of years’ paddling experience.

Florida Lake Canoe Club also arranged a 30km training race on the Klip River from Daleside to Meyerton, which took place on Sunday, 26 August. Kobus and Craig were marshals who assisted at that event that provided excellent fitness training and more experience on the rapids.

After a weekend of 65km racing on the Liebensbergvlei between Bethlehem and Frankfort, the paddlers will be taking the eight-hour trip to Cradock for some good white-water enjoyment.
