Local karate sensei’s determination fed her success
She was about to acquire her Third Dan when she realised that something was wrong.
Gi-Gi Albarran (owner of the Krugersdorp Goju Ryu Karate Academy) started her Goju-Ryu Karate career when she was 13 years old. She participated in a great many competitions – some of which she won, and some of which she lost.
After about four years, she became one of the youngest karatekas to receive her Senior Shodan (First Dan). She soon started a family and completed her Nidan (Second Dan) approximately ten years after the first.
At the age of 30, she was about to acquire her Sandan (Third Dan) when she realised that something was wrong.
After visiting several doctors and having various tests done, she discovered that she has Fibromyalgia – a chronic disorder defined by pain and tenderness throughout the body, as well as fatigue.
At the time she was managing two dojos, which she was forced to give up. The only sport she was allowed to pursue was scuba or recreational diving.
Two years ago, Gi-Gi came across a former sensei – Dave Krause. Sensei Dave fell ill, and asked Gi-Gi to temporarily take over the dojo. As time progressed, he asked her to take over permanently.
As there was uncertainty as to whether the dojo would close down due to Dave’s illness, Gi-Gi went on to practice with Sensei George in Helderkruin.
Through lots of tears, crying and perseverance, she commenced with her training at the Johannesburg Goshuku Karate Training Camp at the beginning of September.
After a week of training with normal, able-bodied athletes she was proudly able to announce that she had finally obtained her hard-earned Sandan through the International Shorei Martial Arts Academy.
