Matthew making waves in the BMX community
The seven-year-old Matthew Fulton has only been riding since last year and already has a world championship title to his name.
For the seven-year-old Matthew Fulton BMX racing is not only a sport. It is a true passion.
Matthew, who only started racing full time in January 2017, has again shown that he was made for the sport when he placed fifth at the UCI BMX World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan in June. He now has a UCI World number 5 ranking.
He won the South African BMX U/7 age group and took two gold medals at the South African nationals. At this event riders are issued their SA numbers according to how they ranked and Matthew and 12 other members of his club each received their numbers.

Matthew practises up to four times a week with his coach Donavan Mienie, and if there is a big competition coming up they practise even more.
When he is not on the track he works out at home by doing strength and core training. On Saturdays he takes boxing lessons and Sundays he participates in club races.
Matthew is part of the Cradle BMX Club, a club that is still very young but has grown from four members last year to 26 members this year. The club also did very well at nationals this year.

According to Matthew his favourite aspects of BMX racing are winning and jumping.
Next on this little guy’s to-do list is the 2019 UCI BMX World Championships in Zolder, Belgium from 23 to 28 July.
Matthew’s parents said none of their son’s achievements would have been possible without coach Donavan’s dedication.
Anyone who wishes to get involved in the sport is welcome to call Donavan on 072 027 7465.
