Young karate champ takes a bow
She has been training with Sensei Morgan Moss since 2012 and started competing in 2014. She now has her brown belt and is working towards her junior black belt.
Thirteen-year-old Marissa Schoombie keeps making waves in the sport of karate, as she always manages to be second to none in all her competitions.
She recently competed at the 2019 Karate South Africa (KSA) National Championship in Durban during August where she won a gold medal and became the national champion in her division.
Marissa is a Grade 7 learner at Laerskool Roodekrans and trains at the Morgan Moss Karate dojo on Ontdekkers Road, in Mindalore.
She has been training with Sensei Morgan Moss since 2012 and started competing in 2014. She now has her brown belt and is working towards her junior black belt.
The young champ has West Rand and Gauteng colours and was awarded her KSA colours in July at an awards evening in Durban.
Her mother, Elaine Schoombie said, “Marissa has a passion for karate and spends most of her time at the dojo. She has indicated that the dojo is her home away from home.”
Marissa is currently ranked second in South Africa in her division which is Girls 12–13 under 47kg.
In September 2017, Marissa represented South Africa at the fourth World Goju Ryu Karate Federation Championships in Romania where she ranked seventh in her division.
She also represented South Africa in November 2018 at the Commonwealth Karate Championships held in Durban and was placed second.
