Former PSL players donate food parcels
Makhanya, a former Kagiso Porto FC player and now director of Porto FC Academy, said the donation is purely an act of goodwill and in celebration of Youth Month.
The coronavirus pandemic is affecting millions of people around the globe, but it has brought out the best in SA’s footballers.
Former PSL professional footballers – Fabian McCarthy, Mathew Booth and Joseph ‘Duku Duku’ Makhanya, extended their hands of goodwill and handed out food parcels to needy and underprivileged young people as well as to Porto Football Club players.
This was done at the Entuthukweni Primary School in Kagiso, in partnership with Global United Football Club (FC), which is an international and non-profit association in Germany, where former Kaizer Chiefs player Stanton ‘Stiga’ Fredericks is an ambassador.

Makhanya, a former Kagiso Porto FC player and now director of Porto FC Academy, said the donation is purely an act of goodwill and in celebration of Youth Month. The trio donated more than 50 food parcels containing basic foodstuffs. Makhanya said the Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc in many families, and some of his players are members of those families.
“Most of the households are living in poverty, and the heads of the families are unable to provide for their kids during lockdown. So this initiative is aimed at alleviating poverty and also forms part of our teams’ social responsibility programme. Most importantly, we are celebrating Youth Month,”Makhanya said.
The former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows midfield maestro added that, “We are celebrating Youth Month by giving away food parcels. We are making sure that our players understand the significance of Youth Day, as the month in which young people laid down their lives for the freedom we are enjoying today.” He said his team invited the former professional players to motivate the younger players on a variety of issues and to become better leaders in future. McCarthy and Booth spoke at length about issues ranging from gender-based violence, drugs and substance abuse, as well as turning young men into responsible fathers.
“We decided to hand over food parcels to the needy school learners because this school is within our area of operation, and has assisted us in unearthing large numbers of our players. We want to thank the former players as well as Global United for making sure these young people can realise their dreams.”
Makhanya said his academy together with the former professional players are looking forward to donating more food parcels to other areas within Mogale City, and beyond the West Rand region.
