Gymnasts head back to the mats

Summit Gymnastics opened its doors again to its gymnasts after a few months stuck in lockdown limbo.

The Summit Gymnastics Club is back in full swing after the nationwide lockdown impeded the little ones’ lively and vigorous training sessions.

Youthful in spirit and mind, these gymnasts had a tough time staying active indoors, unable to get to do what they love – gymnastics.

They looked forward to training again with their favourite coaches alongside their friends to release all the energy that built up while they were stuck at home.

After receiving the go-ahead from the South African Gymnastics Federation and national government, the Summiters were eager to hit the mats again in mid July.

As it has a large open training space in the President Hyper centre, Summit Gymnastics is allowed to have up to 38 members in the building at a time, but allows only about 15 of the kids to train together.

The enter the building from a staircase separate from the main mall while dutifully donning their face masks. Once inside, they’re sanitized and have their temperatures taken at the door before finding their spot on the floor a good distance from each other.

Summit also places sanitizers in the kids’ boxes, which they have to use between practice sets, and a permanently appointed cleaner washes and sanitizes the floor and equipment after every session. Even the coaches had to undergo a special health and safety course to ensure that they would handle the new and strange way of going about gymnastics correctly.

Currently, Summit is opening its doors and welcoming new athletes into their hall, attracting learners who can no longer play rugby, netball or other traditional sports at school, to come and give gymnastics a go and keep active, fit and safe.
