Club rugby postponed for two weeks

The GLRU has made the decision to halt all rugby practices and matches until 21 June and 10 July respectively.

Questions surrounding the possible postponement of senior rugby on the West Rand were raised since contact sports at schools level had been suspended in May, and junior club rugby early in June.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) has announced that it will be suspending all rugby activity until 21 June, when training is set to resume. On Saturday, 10 July teams will continue with the second round of their current leagues. Postponed games from the first round will be played in the second round for double log points.

The GLRU stated in a media press release that, “The primary reason for this decision was the alarming surge of Covid-19 cases in Gauteng. It was therefore deemed necessary and an extremely important decision to make that we protect all players, administrators, the GLRU fraternity and their families at large whilst all of our standard Covid-19 protocols remain in place.

“Please note that this decision was not taken lightly, and we realise that it will cause a minor disruption and inconvenience to many clubs. But, the prevention of sickness and death was an overriding factor and the responsibility of us all to make.

“It would be neglectful of the GLRU to allow the excitement of returning to play to overshadow player safety. Any clubs that defy these protocols will do so at their own risk, and may face censure and discipline.”
