Monument boys make big waves in provincial rugby

Local school becomes an unexpected rugby powerhouse.

Monument Primary School celebrates the remarkable achievement of producing seven provincial rugby players. This achievement serves as a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports and education.

The school’s rugby team participates in the Golden Lions Sub-Super League where some of the best rugby primary schools in Gauteng play. The U13A team made it to the semi-finals. The school’s U13A team also participates in some of the most competitive rugby festivals in the country, such as the North South Rugby tournament where some of the best primary schools compete against each other.

“The school is very proud of this phenomenal achievement and it is an honour and privilege for me to have been a part of this process,” says Thando Magalakangqa, the U13 Lions coach. Thando further elaborated that the players’ hard work and the school’s rugby culture amounted to the players reaching the provincial level.

According to Thando, the school has always had a strong rugby culture but they have worked hard to ensure that each player is equipped with certain attributes and traits that will make them stand out at a provincial or national level.

“My focal point in the pre-season programme was to ensure that each of the players that I knew had enough in the tank to make it to the highest level and polished every single one of the attributes that they needed to stand out among the best of the best.”

To foster teamwork among the players, Thando explains that the team normally goes out to do activities where the players depend on one another for the success of the team and to also build brotherhood, the activities include camping, fishing, canoeing and other outdoor activities.
