Dedicated run for the disabled

A Night Race held at Khosa recently brought runners together for one goal – to assist people with various degrees of mental and physical disabilities.

Khosa Running Club and Krugersdorp Lions Club recently hosted the exciting Night Race for the disabled.

The run saw over 60 participants with members from Krugersdorp Road Runners, Khosa, Lions Club and the West Rand School for the Disabled taking part in the run.

This year’s run was the fifth of its kind covering a distance of 2km where youngsters with disabilities were either pushed around on their wheelchairs or assisted by members of running clubs by running alongside them.

According to the secretary of the Krugersdorp Lions Club, Anne Corden, the purpose of the annual run is all about helping the vulnerable in the community.

“The event is dedicated to people with various degrees of mental and physical disabilities and we want such children to have fun – it is not often that they get to experience physical activities and enjoy themselves. Once it was done the participants received a medal for their hard work. This is only one of many projects within the Krugersdorp community that the Lions love to do every year.”

To ensure safety, marshals were positioned along the entire route with additional marshals at all intersections. All disabled participants were also accompanied by a caregiver and a member of the running club or community.
