Big milestones at Sterkfontein parkrun

Runners, walkers and volunteers came together for a festive morning of milestones and community spirit at Sterkfontein parkrun.

Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge hosted another successful parkrun on December 6, which also coincided with parkrun Volunteer Day.

Organiser Roger Crichton explained that parkrun relies heavily on volunteers to keep the weekly event running smoothly, with around 26 different roles available.

“Some roles are stationary and ideal for those who are less mobile, while a few running/ walking roles require completing the full 5km course. Without volunteers, there would simply be no parkrun, and Sterkfontein is always looking for more helpers,” Roger said.

The December 6 event drew 140 participants, including seven first-time runners and 12 visitors experiencing the Sterkfontein route for the first time.

Three runners also celebrated milestone achievements:

• Andre Stickling – 25 parkruns
• Alice Erasmus – 25 parkruns
• Tania Kruger – 100 parkruns

Tania, a resident and dedicated volunteer, marked both her 100th parkrun and her 25th volunteer milestone. She crossed the finish line to cheers and later celebrated with cake.

Roger added that milestone recognitions for both runners and volunteers include 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 occasions.

Sterkfontein parkrun will continue every Saturday throughout December and into the new year. The run starts at 08:00.
