Krugersdorp Road Runners shine at Comrades

30 club athletes earned medals at the 2026 Comrades Marathon, including seven prestigious Bill Rowan medals.

Krugersdorp Road Runners completed the 2026 Comrades Marathon in style, with 30 athletes earning medals and seven securing Bill Rowan medals.

According to club spokesperson Dominique Smit, leading the club’s contingent was Trymore Masebe, who was the first club athlete home in a time of 7:26:25. He was closely followed by Carel Laubscher, who finished second among the club’s runners.

Retha Combrink finished third for the club and was the first female club member across the line, recording a time of 8:05:33.

Reflecting on her ultramarathon experience, Combrink said her favourite moment was the overwhelming support from club members and the connections she made with fellow runners during the event.

“As cliché as it might seem, my favourite part of Comrades was experiencing the love and support from fellow runners and strangers along the route. That’s what makes the event so special to me – everyone working together towards a communal goal,” Combrink said.

The club collected seven Bill Rowan medals, awarded to runners who complete the 89km ultramarathon in a time of between seven hours, 30 minutes and eight hours, 59 minutes.

Commenting on the club’s overall performance, Smit said the runners embodied the spirit of the race through perseverance, camaraderie and inspiration, while the support of family members, volunteers and supporters contributed to the event’s success.

“The club also acknowledges the invaluable support provided by families, volunteers, supporters and club members who assisted throughout the journey. Krugersdorp Road Runners remains immensely proud of every athlete who wore the green and gold with pride at Comrades Marathon 2026.”

The club is now looking ahead to next year’s race and hopes to see even more runners representing the club and earning medals.
