Senior citizen football a showcase of talent for elders

Elders show off their skills in football league.

You are never too old to enjoy exercising and competing for top sports honours. This is what the elders who took part in the Soweto Senior Citizen League proved to be the case as the tournament reached its epic conclusion on Wednesday, 12 November at Kagiso Sports Complex.

The Soweto Senior Citizen Football League is a league where women aged 55 and older play against top teams in Johannesburg and stand a chance to win top honours in the league. The tournament is held annually from March until November. There are usually eight teams that compete for top prizes. The top four teams then qualify for the semi-final where two teams will compete for third, second and first places.

According to the chairperson of the league, Peter Thuntsane, the tournament is in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and the Department of Sports and Recreation.

“The purpose of the league is to ensure that the elderly are active and healthy. We have football matches twice a month in different venues across Johannesburg,” Peter said.

The league is part of the Active Ageing programme, a collaboration between the Department of Sports, Department of Health, Sports and Recreation, and the South African Older Persons Forum, aimed at promoting active and purposeful ageing.
