Sesame Sports Challenge unites community through fun and learning
A day of sport, play, and learning brought Krugersdorp families together as Sesame Workshop celebrated 25 years of empowering children through joyful education.
Laughter, teamwork and celebration filled the Key West Action Sports Arena as Krugersdorp families took part in the first-ever Sesame Sports Challenge on November 1 – an event combining sport, play and learning to mark 25 years of Sesame Workshop International South Africa.
The fun-filled family day encouraged participation beyond competition, with entry fees and donations supporting the organisation’s ongoing commitment to early learning across South Africa.
According to public relations manager Keabetswe Matshidiso, the initiative stems from a simple truth: children learn best through play.
“By using sport as an effective learning tool, Sesame Workshop aims to establish stronger foundations for early childhood development, fostering teamwork, confidence, empathy, and resilience – life lessons that go well beyond the field. This isn’t just about sport. It’s about standing together to change the story for South Africa’s children. It’s also about celebrating 25 years of Sesame Workshop South Africa, a milestone marked by creating joyful, educational moments that shape futures and strengthen communities,” Keabetswe explained.

While the sporting matches brought plenty of excitement, the children’s activity zone proved just as popular.
“Laughter echoed as young ones explored playful learning stations, engaged in art corners and participated in interactive games. This is a cheerful reminder that children learn best through play. A memorable highlight was the appearance of Elmo, the beloved friend from Takalani Sesame, whose energy and charm brought smiles and cheers across the arena,” Keabetswe continued.
Teams gave it their all on the courts, with SABC taking the soccer title and Jozi My Jozi claiming victory in netball.
“The remarkable response to this inaugural event has set the stage for an even bigger occasion. Sesame Workshop International South Africa looks forward to welcoming more teams and greater participation in 2026, continuing to harness the power of sport to nurture a generation of children who grow smarter, stronger and kinder,” Keabetswe concluded.
