Tzaneen doctor accused of raping teenager loses appeal

The Nkowankowa Regional Court has upheld a sentence of eight years for rape of Dr Dumisani Chauke (57) on Friday, September 23.

This comes after the doctor appealed the rape conviction in November 2020.
On Friday the court dismissed his appeal.
He has been found guilty of raping a 17-year-old girl in 2017, who visited his medical practice in Nkowankowa for a consultation.

“The victim was placed on the bed for medical examination when she suddenly experienced some pains, she then realised that the accused was raping her.
“The victim quickly rushed out of the consulting room and went straight home where she informed her mother about the ordeal,” Col Moatshe Ngoepe, former spokesperson of the police explained in 2017.

“A case of rape was immediately opened and an initial police investigation ensued.
“The accused was arrested shortly afterwards,” he said
After his appeal of his rape conviction, he was released on a R20 000 bail.
He then went back to practice medicine at his surgery in Nkowankowa.

The case was investigated by Sgt Helray Mmola from the SAPS Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who meticulously investigated the matter until she acquired the jail sentence.
