One man dead after baptism

The police in Giyani have opened an inquest docket after a man drowned following a baptism ceremony on Saturday, January 28 in the Nsami dam in Makosha village outside Giyani.

It is alleged that the victim was at the dam to be baptised. After he was baptised, he told the pastor and other members of the church that he wants to swim across the dam. The victim entered the water, failed to swim, and drowned.

“The pastor and church members tried to retrieve the body from the water unsuccessfully. They reported the incident to the police and a search and rescue team was summoned. They managed to retrieve the body from the dam.

“The deceased was identified as Naboth Baloyi, originally from Maputo, but was staying at Risinga village,” said Const Ridgewell Rikhotso, police spokesperson.
