Police shutdown illegal gambling outlets

Police have closed down an illegal gambling site during an operation in the Phalaborwa area with the aim to root out illegal gambling in the district.

Operation Takedown was carried out by the provincial organised crime investigation unit, and FLASH, a unit that ensures compliance and enforcement of firearm, liquor, and secondhand goods control legislation. The Limpopo Gambling Board (LGB) was also part of the operation. The operation came after a lengthy investigation involving the police intelligence unit and the LGB.

The police confiscate gambling equipment.

This helped to verify if an establishment was registered with the board or not. Two female suspects (40 and 47) were arrested for operating illegal gambling sites. In the same operation, ten more people were also nabbed for engaging in illegal gambling activities.

The operation also saw fifty illegal gambling machines confiscated along with R3000 in cash. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon. Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has applauded the collaborative efforts that led to the arrests and closure of a gambling site.
