Ba-Phalaborwa mayor reaches out to local learners

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality mayor has kept her promise to help Baranuka Secondary School after they were named the worst performing public school in the area last year.

Mayor Malatji visited the school recently and in partnership with Komatsu, an international utility company, donated menstrual cups to Grade 8 and 9 girls. The menstrual cups will help young girls attend school during their periods. Menstrual cups are renewable and can last from six months to 10 years.  During her back-to-school campaign earlier this year, Malatji pledged to assist the Lulekani school as well as Makikele High School in Selwane after their poor performance in the 2022 matric results.

The Grade 12 class of Baranuka attained a 28.9% pass rate in 2022. In recent years the school faced challenges such as protests, general workers not getting paid on time, learners lacking stationery, and Grade 12 learners writing their final exams late in 2021. Other schools will also benefit from the menstrual cup programme. These include Nkateko High School, Ntshuxeko High School, Lebeko High School, Makikele High School, Prieska High, Maphokwane, Matome Malatji High School, and Lepato High School respectively.

“This is an integral part to ensure that learners do not miss class due to the scarcity of sanitary pads,” Malatji said.
