2 die in head-on collision outside Tzaneen
An ambulance driver and an SUV driver were killed in a head-on collision on the R81 near the Lemondokop turn-off on Saturday March 30.

The ambulance was responding to an incident at Belevue village when the collision happened. Tragically, both drivers were killed on impact, while the ambulance assistant, three patients and three passengers in the SUV survived. “All the survivors are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals. Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba, is saddened by this horrific incident and personally extended her support and well wishes to the injured and the families of the deceased.
“The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by emergency responders, and healthcare professionals in the line of duty. The department extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and reaffirms its commitment to support all those affected by this tragedy,” said department spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha.

Ramathuba’s visit to the hospital is a gesture of solidarity and appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by emergency personnel, across the province. She visited the family of Willy Mashilela, the ambulance driver at Bochabelo village. She was accompanied by the provincial acting operational manager of EMS, all district managers and station managers, CEO of Kgapane Hospital and the acting district manager of the Mopani district.
Mashilela’s family described him as a hardworking, dedicated and committed employee who loved his work. The MEC, while conveying her message of condolences to the family, expressed her devastation as a result of his death. She appealed to motorists to respect emergency vehicles on the road, be it police officials, traffic officers and ambulances, because an ambulance it is either responding to an emergency or carrying patients to the nearest medical facilities.
