Hoedspruit teen fights rare disease

Troy Matthysen (17) faces a rare disease and multiple health setbacks, his family pleads for support amidst financial struggles.

LIMPOPO – Troy Matthysen, a 17-year-old from Kampersrus, recently suffered a major setback in his ongoing battle with Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA), a rare disease that affects adolescent boys.

Troy, who was diagnosed with JNA at the end of 2021, was again admitted to Unitas Hospital in Pretoria earlier this month after it was discovered that he had developed meningitis, which spread to his brain and caused brain fluid leakage.

His father, Jeff Matthysen, shared the challenging journey they’ve been enduring. “We’ve been at the hospital for the last two weeks,” Jeff told the Herald, explaining that they had to sanitise their home to reduce the risk of germs that may have contributed to Troy’s setback.

On Thursday, November 14, Troy was scheduled for an operation, but during a CT scan, doctors discovered a 2.5cm lesion at the base of his skull.

“The doctor referred him to a neurologist,” Jeff said, adding that an urgent operation was now required. Unlike the previous plan to go through Troy’s septum, this time the doctors will need to operate through his skull. The surgery is considered risky but essential to prevent further leakage of brain fluid. The doctors said the operation is dangerous, but it’s necessary to stop the fluid from leaking,” said Jeff.

Troy was then scheduled for emergency surgery on Monday, November 18.

As a single parent of two sons, Jeff expressed the emotional toll this situation has taken on him. “The constant setbacks in Troy’s health are upsetting, and it’s tough for me. My younger son is also feeling the strain due to Troy’s absence,” Jeff said.

The financial pressure has been overwhelming for the family. Jeff has been unable to work due to the need to travel between Kampersrus and Pretoria for Troy’s treatment.

“Fear is taking over as I’m not sure how I’m going to keep up with the bills. Food, rent, and school fees are my constant worries. Any donations will be appreciated,” he said.

To support the Matthysen family, Die Studio in Kampersrus hosted a car wash fundraiser on Monday, November 18.

The Herald will continue to provide updates on Troy’s health as new information becomes available.
