Eskom extends meter upgrade deadline in Tzaneen

Eskom extends the prepaid meter upgrade deadline, offering "zero buyers" more time to ensure KRN2 compliance after Tzaneen rush.

TZANEEN – It is a much different scene at the Tzaneen Eskom branch in Skirving Street this week after the deadline for updating electricity prepaid meters was extended.

In the past three weeks, customers converged at the branch trying to upgrade their meters before the initial deadline on Sunday, November 24, causing significant traffic and disruption to local businesses.

Eskom has now granted an extension to customers referred to as “zero buyers”, allowing them additional time to update their meters to be Key Revision Number 2 (KRN2) compliant.

This extension follows a technological breakthrough that enables Eskom to pre-create Key Change Tokens (KCT) on its online vending system.

“Zero buyers in this situation need to go to their legal vending sites with their meter numbers to buy electricity. They will be issued their Key Change Tokens by the vending agents to make their meters KRN2 compliant,” an Eskom press release stated.

Daphne Mokwena, national spokesperson for Eskom, reported that approximately 5.8 million out of the 6.9 million registered meters have been upgraded.

For assistance, Eskom customers can call 0860 037 566.
