New facilities open at Maphuta Malatji Hospital

Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba opens new outpatient and clinical support departments at Maphutha Malatji Hospital.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba officially opened the newly built outpatient and clinical support departments at Maphutha Malatji Hospital on Thursday, December 19.

She was accompanied by Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego, Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure MEC Ernest Rachoene, Mopani District Mayor Pule Shayi, and the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor Merriam Malatji.

The building has a combined footprint of 8 920 square meters and the areas are for allied health, radiology unit, dental unit, staff occupational health and safety, laboratory, pharmacy, victim support centre, and administration entrance. The facility features a staff cafeteria and a wellness centre equipped with advanced technology. The building is set to ease pressure on nearby hospitals and improve healthcare access for the Ba-Phalaborwa and Mopani district communities.

In her speech Ramathuba highlighted the facility as a beacon of resilience and collaboration, overcoming challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, community protests, and logistical setbacks.

The project, which forms part of the national hospital revitalisation programme, aims to modernise healthcare facilities and bring essential services closer to residents.

“Operation Bophelo Pele, our commitment to strengthening primary healthcare, continues to guide our efforts. We aim to provide comprehensive support to ensure that all people in Limpopo receive the services they need without travelling long distances. Today, this revitalised hospital is a step closer to fulfilling that vision,” said Ramathuba.

“This hospital represents hope, dignity, and the promise of a healthier tomorrow. Let us cherish and protect this facility as a vital resource for our community,” she continued.

The premier concluded by commending healthcare workers for their dedication and urged the community to support and preserve the newly revitalised hospital.

Maphutha Malatji Hospital CEO Dr Sello Rasello conveyed his appreciation.

“The fact that the state-of-the-art hospital will be able to treat our community makes me feel incredibly overwhelmed. This building is for everyone in the community. We are extremely grateful,” he expressed.

Mopani District Municipality Mayor Pule Shayi encouraged community members to respect the hospital and avoid vandalism. “We would appreciate it if the health workers ensured that all patients leave the hospital gates healed,” he said.
