WATCH: Fire breaks out at Phalaborwa substation

An early morning fire broke out at the Eskom Selati substation, with possible impact on local electricity supply.

PHALABORWA – The Eskom Selati substation in Phalaborwa caught fire this morning (Tuesday, July 22).

A video shared on a community load-shedding group shows flames engulfing part of the substation, with the man filming the scene describing it as “too much.” He added, “This might leave many areas without electricity.”

Ward 12 councillor Sybrandt de Beer told the Herald that although he had not yet visited the scene, he began hearing sirens rushing towards the area around 09:15.

“I don’t think major damage has occurred, as the electricity in town was only switched off shortly after 9am and was restored within an hour,” he said. “For now, it doesn’t look like there’s significant damage, but we will wait for updates from the authorities.”

The Herald attempted to contact the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality for more information, but has not received a response.
