Phalaborwa golf fundraiser supports cancer warrior

The “Swing for a Cause” golf event raised funds for Leandi van Wyk’s cancer treatment, uniting the community.

PHALABORWA – The spirit of community and compassion was on full display during the recent “Swing for a Cause” golf event, held to support Leandi van Wyk, a brave local woman battling an aggressive form of breast cancer that has sadly spread beyond the initial diagnosis.

The fundraiser was organised by Christoff Smit and Chane Cloete in partnership with One Way Church. Their goal was to raise R100 000 toward the R300 000 needed for Leandi’s life-saving treatment.

While the target wasn’t fully reached, Cloete said every contribution counts.

“Although we didn’t hit our goal, the event was a great success. We’ll be hosting another fundraiser soon to continue supporting Leandi and her family,” she said.

The day on the golf course was filled with laughter, generosity, and fun. Golfers enjoyed light-hearted challenges, including a contest to see who could hit a marshmallow the farthest, complete with prizes for the winners.

The tournament ended with a hearty spit braai to thank all the participants, donors, and sponsors for their support.

In a heartwarming gesture, leftover food from the event was shared with residents of the Bougainvilla Care Centre.

“We were blessed with more than enough and wanted to extend that blessing to others,” Cloete said.

She added that events like these strengthen the bonds within the community.

“This is more than a fundraiser, it’s a step toward unity and revival in our town. It’s amazing to see how people come together to support one another.”

Cloete extended heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors, including Ford Phalaborwa, NTT Phalaborwa, Bilnor, and MJM Electrical, who added unique touches to designated holes on the course and helped make the day unforgettable.
