Selwane’s 64-year-old footballers defy age on the pitch
From goalkeeping duties to a lifelong love of the game, the Selwane pair say football has kept them active and their health in check well into their sixties.
LIMPOPO – Age has not diminished the passion of Sarah Machete (64) and Salphinah Malatji (64), two dedicated players from Mohlabatse FC, a football team for older women in Selwane. Instead, the pair are proving that determination, fitness and teamwork can keep dreams alive both on and off the field.
Still guarding the goal with pride
Since the team’s establishment in March last year, Machete has been the first-choice goalkeeper and has played a key role in the club’s impressive performances.
Mohlabatse FC has enjoyed success in league competition and currently occupies fifth position on the league table after winning four matches this year.
Dreaming of the top spot
Despite the team’s current standing, Machete remains optimistic about what lies ahead.
“We aim to finish the season in first place. I will do everything I can to help the team by making sure I stop as many goals as possible. I enjoy being a goalkeeper,” she said.
A game that keeps them young at heart
Machete said football is about more than winning matches. She believes the sport has had a positive impact on the health and well-being of the players.
“Playing football has helped us stay active, healthy and fit, and it has contributed to keeping our blood pressure under control. I enjoy watching professional football because it motivates me to improve my game. My passion for the sport has helped me learn and understand football much better,” she added.
A passion that never faded
Alongside Machete is defender Salphinah Malatji.
Malatji said her love for football began at a young age, when she regularly attended local soccer tournaments. “I have been attending soccer tournaments since I was very young, and I have always been passionate about football,” she said.
Her lifelong love for the game inspired her to continue playing as an adult, and she now takes pride in representing Mohlabatse FC alongside other women who share the same enthusiasm for football.
