Suspect arrested for 2019 Malamulele carjacking and murder

Arrest follows years of investigations into the killing of teacher Matimu Chauke and the carjacking of his vehicle in Giyani.

LIMPOPO – Police have arrested a 45-year-old suspect in connection with a carjacking and murder that took place more than five years ago in Malamulele.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says members of the Giyani Detectives received information about the wanted suspect on Wednesday afternoon (August 27).

Acting swiftly, officers launched an operation and arrested the suspect at Nkowankowa Complex, in the Ritavi policing area.

“The murder dates back to 2019, when police were called to a crime scene in Makumeke Mxadzi Ville. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 31-year-old Matimu Chauke, a local high school teacher, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics,” says Ledwaba.

A case of carjacking and murder was opened, and a few days later, with the assistance of a tracking company, Chauke’s stolen vehicle was recovered abandoned in the Vuwani policing area.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Friday, August 29), facing charges of murder and carjacking.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the arrest, saying: “This arrest is a true reminder that no matter how long it takes to track the criminal, the wheel of justice will eventually catch up with you.”

Police confirmed that investigations are continuing.
