Drakensig Primary welcomes new school principal
Staff and learners have welcomed a familiar face to the role after more than a decade at the school.
HOEDSPRUIT – Drakensig Primary School has officially welcomed Buks Strydom as its new principal following his formal appointment on June 1.
Strydom joined Drakensig in 2008 and has since become an integral part of the school community. Over the years, he has established a reputation as a passionate teacher and respected leader who consistently places learners’ needs at the centre of his work.
Leadership experience within the school
Among his many achievements, Strydom served as head of department for the intermediate and senior phases for four years. In this role, he played a key part in supporting both learners and teachers while helping to maintain high academic standards.
In 2025, he received further recognition for his outstanding contribution to education when he won the National Teachers Award in his district for excellence in primary school teaching.
Acting principal role ahead of appointment
Since August last year, he has served as acting principal, successfully guiding the school through a period of transition.
His willingness to engage with learners, staff and parents alike has made him a popular and approachable leader.
School community welcomes appointment
According to Carina Nel, Strydom’s appointment is a source of pride for the entire school community.
“Strydom has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and a genuine passion for education. He is a hands-on principal who leads with pride and always puts our learners’ interests first. His love for the school and commitment to excellence are evident in everything he does. Both staff and learners highly respect him, and we are privileged to have such an inspiring and competent principal leading the school,” said Nel.
