Small earthquake recorded near northern Kruger
A small earthquake, initially estimated at magnitude 3, was recorded near Phalaborwa in the northern KNP area over the weekend.
PHALABORWA – A small earthquake was recorded in the northern Kruger National Park area on Saturday, September 19.
Initial seismic information places the event in the vicinity of Phalaborwa, although the exact location and magnitude are still subject to confirmation.

Early readings have put the earthquake at around magnitude 3, while one international earthquake-monitoring service has given a preliminary estimate of 4.1. The latter has not been confirmed.
The Council for Geoscience (CGS), which operates South Africa’s National Seismograph Network, cautions that earthquake parameters can be revised as seismic data is analysed.
