Help Bongani fulfill his hockey dream

Fourteen-year-old Bongani Makhuba from Elim outside Giyani is an athlete and hockey player who has been selected to be part of the National Winter Games hosted in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng.

“I started playing hockey in 2019 for Ridgeway Preparatory School and I was coached by Miss van Zyl. “In 2020 nothing much really happened as Covid-19 interfered and in 2021, when I was in grade 7, I started playing u.13 provincial hockey for Limpopo and my coach was Prosper Jaya.

“Because of the pandemic we mainly played locally in friendly matches. I now play hockey for Ridgeway College and my coach is Craig Viljoen. I managed to qualify for the Limpopo provincial hockey A team this year. We have training every two weeks on a Sunday either at Polokwane or Stanford Lake College,” said Bongani.

His mother, Leonah Makhuba, said that at first, she was not happy with him playing hockey as she felt it consumed too much of his time.
“I felt like he did not have time for his studies and we are always on the road since his practice is far from where we are. I am very happy
that my son will be participating in the National Winter Games as I know how passionate and good he is at it, so I try to give him as much support as I can,” she said.

Bongani needs an estimate of R3 450 for the tour that will be hosted in the June/July school holidays from July 11-15. The money includes the tour kit, transportation, accommodation, meals, a SASHOC levy, and extras. “It would be highly appreciated if you can contribute to his tour fees in any way possible, to help him and his team achieves great success at the regional tournament.”
