Mninginisi are Mayor’s Cup champions

Mninginisi Gezani United won the 2023 Mayor’s Cup after beating Mbatlo Hastalavista 4-3 on penalties.

This comes after the two teams in the men’s soccer category of the Greater Giyani Municipality tournament drew 0-0 on the field forcing the match to go to a penalty shootout to find the winner. Since both teams came prepared and determined to win the tournament, the match was not easy. When it eventually came to the penalty shootout, two players from Mbatlo Hastalavista panicked and hit the posts.

While their goalkeeper Xikombelo Nghonyama managed to save one penalty shot, this did not do much to level the score against their opponent; hence they ended up losing the match against Gezani United. The tournament attracted spectators from both local and district municipalities, as well as scouts from big teams in the PSL, who were looking to find potential players among the teams participating in the tournament.

“We specifically requested that the youth is represented among the players because we wanted to give them a platform where they could be spotted by scouts working for teams playing at a professional level,” said the mayor as she congratulated the winners. “I would like to thank everybody that has supported this tournament including the participants.
