Zoë on her way to the top

At only 14 years Zoë Venter is the Tzaneen Tennis Club's women's champion.

“I started playing tennis when I was 5 years old, and I have loved it ever since. I play for the Limpopo Tennis team, and I am a reserve for the South African U15 team.” Zoë says she and her dad have played tennis every Sunday afternoon since she was small. “The more we played, the more my love for the game grew,” she says. She trains two to three times a week, goes to the gym, and plays her other sports when she has time. She also excels in hockey and cricket.

“It is a challenge to juggle my sports and study commitments,” she says. She has participated in eleven ProKennex tournaments in Polokwane which she has won, all due to her diligent hard work. “I have also played ten tournaments in other provinces like Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Free State,” she says. Some of her achievements in these tournaments include winning a Grand Prix tournament in Mbombela “My dream is to play professionally. My tennis coach is Reenen Bergmann who has helped me to get where I am today,” she says. “For now, I am a Gr 9 learner at Merensky Agricultural Academy, but one day I will be the best female tennis player in the world,” she concludes.

Emelda Tintswalo Shipalana

Tintswalo Shipalana, a journalist for the Letaba Herald, has been in the media industry for over a decade. She started her journey in radio, but ended up in print which is her first love.
