Gallopers prepare for the Comrades Marathon

Runners from Giyani Gallopers Athletics Club took on the Mzansi Athletics Club Half Marathon in Polokwane recently.

Although the local runners did not win any of the categories, they finished their races in good times. The Gallopers have about 28 runners who are heading to the Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal next weekend on June 9. The club embarked on a training programme in preparation for the Comrades, including a 60km uphill training in Tzaneen recently.

Tumelo Phago of Mzansi Athletics Club won the men’s 21.1km race in Mzansi Half Marathon in Polokwane with a time of 01:13:29. He was followed by Assefa Salo of Pietersburg Athletics Club with a time of 01:20:28 and Desmond Manyoka was in third place with a time of 01:20:58. Kenyan Rosaline Isaiah won the women’s 21.1km with the time of 01:30:33.

She was followed by Thabita Tsatsa and Lize-Marie Opperman in second and third with times of 01:43:19 and 01:55:23 respectively. Meanwhile, in the 10km men’s category, Zeinel Tsipa obtained first place with a time of 31:44, Moses Ralivhana was second with a time of 35:29 and third was Orifha Netshilindi, finishing with a time of 35:47. The 10km women’s winner was Elizna Kotze with a time of 47:44, second was Manoha Mothomogolo with a time of 48:10 and third was Muzi Mboweni in a time of 48:20.
