Tzaneen cyclists take on Joburg 94.7

Tzaneen cyclists joined thousands at the Virgin Active Ride Joburg 94.7 race, showcasing determination despite the heat and tough conditions.

TZANEEN – Tzaneen cyclists were among the thousands of riders who recently participated in the Virgin Active Ride Joburg 94.7 race.

The event saw entries of both individual cyclists and cycling club members from the area.

Athol Fernandez, a member of the Tzaneen Cycling Club, completed the race on his tandem bicycle with a time of 03:50:57. Despite the challenging heat, Fernandez expressed his satisfaction with finishing the race, riding with Thea Brits on the tandem.

Ntwanano Ngobeni, another regular cyclist from Tzaneen, described the race as brutal, saying that it was his first race in two years and left him struggling to walk for days afterwards. Ngobeni finished the 97km in 04:04:17. He said that being accustomed to Tzaneen’s hot weather helped him cope with the race’s heat.

Also participating was Nyiko Masango from Nkowankowa, who cycled for the I Love Boobies charity group to raise awareness for breast cancer. Masango was joined by a friend who survived stage 2 breast cancer.

The cancer survivor completed the race for the first time as a celebration of overcoming the disease.
