Lulekani Primary heads to netball nationals

Lulekani Primary's u/12 netball team heads to nationals after strong provincial showing, aiming to reclaim their 2023 title.

PHALABORWA – Lulekani Primary School’s u/12 netball team will represent Limpopo at the upcoming national championships, alongside Tzaneen Primary School. The two schools secured their spots after finishing first and second, respectively, in the provincial league, with Tzaneen claiming the top spot.

The national tournament will be hosted in Limpopo this year, taking place at Pietersburg Hoërskool from July 25 to 26.

Lulekani, the 2023 national champions, delivered an impressive performance to reach the finals, winning all their matches except the final, where they lost 7–4 to Tzaneen during the provincial games held in Polokwane on June 21.

On their road to the final, they recorded victories over Dikgalaopeng (14–7), Fumasni (14–6), Kremetart (15–2), Oosie (7–6), Bosveld (13–9), and Dr Annecke (7–5).

Head coach Khomisani Ceko praised her team’s resilience and determination, especially as many players were new to provincial competition following the departure of last year’s stars to Majeje High School.

“We’re proud of the girls. They’ve shown great tenacity and spirit despite the pressure,” said Ceko. “We’re now preparing for nationals and also appealing for donations to support our trip.”

Lulekani now competes in the Botho category, which includes multi-racial schools with better facilities and equipment. Ceko is receiving support from Ayonda Ceko of the Impala Netball Team to help prepare the players.

In 2023, Lulekani Primary made history by winning the national title in Boksburg, outshining 20 schools from across South Africa. They now aim to defend their reputation on home soil.
