Lulekani Primary netball stars eye national trophy
Crowned Limpopo champions, Lulekani Primary’s u/12 netball team heads to nationals, calling for sponsors to support their journey.
PHALABORWA – Lulekani Primary School’s u/12 netball team has been crowned Limpopo champions in both the Fast Five and Hoop League tournaments, held recently at Ben Vorster in Tzaneen.
Their impressive performance has earned them a spot at the national championships in Johannesburg, scheduled for October 6–7.
The team dominated the provincial tournament, winning all five of their matches. They defeated Moloke 29-2, Ekucathuleni 37-0, and Tlharihani 36-5. The semi-final match was a tougher contest, with Lulekani edging out Dr Annecke 20-15. The final was a thrilling encounter, as they narrowly beat Zwanani by a single point, 25-24.
Head coach Khomisani Ceko praised her team’s commitment and grit throughout the tournament. “I’m incredibly proud of my girls. This time we’re training harder than ever because we want to bring the trophy home again,” she said.
However, Ceko also expressed concern about the team’s ability to travel to nationals due to financial constraints. “We currently don’t have the funds for transport and accommodation. Without sponsorship, our dream might not come true. We’re pleading with local businesses and sponsors to assist us.”
Lulekani Primary has consistently represented Limpopo at national level. Last year, they reached the quarterfinals of the Schools’ League. In August this year, they were one of only two teams, alongside Tzaneen Primary School, to represent the province in another major tournament.
Now competing in the more competitive Botho category, which includes well-resourced schools, Lulekani continues to defy the odds. The team is receiving additional support from Ayonda Ceko of the Impala Netball Team and Happiness Mabunda to help prepare the players for nationals.
In 2023, Lulekani Primary made history by winning the national title in Boksburg, outperforming 20 schools from across South Africa. They now hope to repeat that success, but need the community’s support to get there.
