Strong performances mark Munnik MTB race

The 2025 Munnik Meerkat MTB Challenge united riders of all ages, with standout performances across 15km, 35km, 50km and 70km races.

TZANEEN – The annual Munnik Meerkat MTB Challenge once again brought riders of all ages and abilities together for a day of grit, speed, and community spirit on Saturday, September 20. From the youngest nippers racing 15km to elite athletes tackling the 70km endurance course, competitors gave their all across distances and categories.

In the 15km route, youngsters lit up the shorter route, with Mauritz Meiring setting the pace for the boys. He claimed overall honours in a blistering 28:32.7, also securing the u/12 sprogs crown. Sian Swartz powered to victory in the u/10 nipper’s division.

For the girls, Milan Botha impressed with a swift 29:51.0 finish, taking both overall and u/12 sprogs titles. Evené Botha celebrated a win in the u/10 nippers.

E-biker Anike de Villiers finished in 38:53.5 to claim the women’s and overall victory. James Samwell led the men home in 39:25.2.

In the 35km distance, in batch A, Daniel Dreyer emerged as the standout, winning both overall and the 13–14 sub-juniors in 1:18:29.9. Among the girls, Kristen Thompson took top honours in 1:26:39.5.

Wayne Lacey not only secured the overall crown in 1:28:26.6 but also topped the 50–59 masters men. Nicolene Smit was the fastest woman in 1:35:37.2, while Wirka Burger, Toni Lacey, Delney Conradie, and Elna Koch earned wins in their respective categories.

The 35km e-bike race was dominated by Gerhard Bezuidenhout, who crossed the line first in 1:10:26.6, with Anton Erasmus leading the master’s class.

The longer distances brought out powerful performances. In the 50km, Henro van der Walt stormed to overall victory in 1:47:09.0, also clinching the junior men’s division. Joshua Robertson triumphed in the youth boys’ category, while Chantelle Gouws claimed the women’s overall win in 2:12:26.1, doubling up with the youth girls’ title. Maronelle Lewis secured the junior crown.

Waldo Strijdom claimed the overall men’s win in 1:59:02.8, while Rachel Thompson took the women’s in 2:20:31.5.

Riders from Ben Vorster High School, Werner van Wyk, Jean Bordeaux Martin and Wirka Burger.

Age-group victories went to Tammy Trueman, Yvonne Strijdom, Retha Beukes, and Caren Bronn. Among the men, strong finishes came from Dillon Stone, Michael Wood, Shaun Thompson, and Jeffrey Botha.

The 50km e-bike saw Jacques Coetzee leading the way in 1:43:06.5. Yolande Stewart was the top woman in 1:46:44.2.

The toughest test of the day belonged to the 70km riders. In the men’s race, Alan Gordon powered to an overall win in 2:32:13.4, also topping the 30–39 sub-vet men’s category. Category wins were claimed by Daan Terblanche (elite), Alwyn Jordaan (vet), Awie Hattingh (master), and Bertus Dreyer (grand master).

In the women’s division, Chantel Weyers was the standout, taking overall and sub-vet women’s titles in 3:25:27.0. She was joined on the podium by Wilma Willemse, Lizelle Cronje, and Annette van Coller, who each won their categories.

The 70km e-bike was dominated by Dylan Chilcott, finishing in 2:34:01.6 to close the day’s racing on a high.
