Giyani teen bowls his way to national cricket spotlight
At just 18, Ntshuxeko Sibatha is turning heads with bowling speeds of 128km/h, earning a place in the SA Hub squad and eyeing national selection.
LIMPOPO – At just 18 years old, Ntshuxeko Sibatha of Section-F in Giyani, possesses a rare and explosive talent that has coaches and scouts in awe. What sets him apart from other young cricket players of his age is his bowling ability.
While many bowlers in the u/19 age group are still striving for pace, Ntshuxeko is already shattering expectations with his bowling speed.
According to his coach, Dingani Mathonsi of the Giyani Cricket Hub, Ntshuxeko’s talent was discovered last year when he bowled at a blistering speed of 128km/h, a speed which he said was about 10km/h faster than the average speed for players of his age.
“And that was when he was just 17, and we can only imagine how fast he would bowl if he were to be tested again this year,” he added.
According to him, Ntshuxeko was one of only two players from Limpopo recently selected for the SA Hub squad, which competed in a tournament in Pretoria from October 16 to 19 against the 45 best cricket schools in the country.
The tournament is said to serve as preparation for the international games that are said to be scheduled for January next year. Only two players from Limpopo managed to make it into the squad.
“Together with Ntshuxeko, they were the only two players representing Limpopo at the event,” explained the coach. “We haven’t yet received their assessment results, but if they performed well, they would definitely be included in the January squad expected to play against international teams,” he added.
Ntshuxeko told the Herald that he was keeping his fingers crossed, hoping to secure a place among the final eleven players forming the squad.
Despite his impressive performance at the event and growing reputation, he remains humble and realistic about the level of competition he faces.
“No matter how good you are, you can never predict your inclusion on the team when every talented player in the country is fighting for the same spot,” he said thoughtfully.
He added that his focus now is on maintaining his form and fitness while waiting for the final announcement.
“Every day I train hard to keep myself ready for the game, and with a bit of luck, I believe I might be selected,” he said with a confident smile.
Meanwhile, his supportive mother, Gladys Sibatha, described her son as a well-behaved and dedicated young man who is deeply committed to cricket and destined for success.
“He’s a disciplined young man who never gives us any trouble at home, and I believe that even if he doesn’t make it this time, his future in cricket is firmly rooted,” she said, thanking his coaches for grooming him so well.
